Invest in a Sea Nest habitat.

High quality marine restoration doesn’t need to be high cost.

Bay and harbour environments

Our inaugural product, the Kokoru, has been designed for stability in bay or harbour environments. The Kokoru is the smallest marine Sea Nest module and provides 3 square metres of surface habitat, 0.4 cubic metres of refuge, and is stable in up to 3.9 m/sec (7.8 knots) of current.

Coastal environments

The Takutai is a larger module and is being designed for coastal and shoreline conditions. The Takutai will provide approximately 5 square metres of surface habitat. This product will be available in late 2024 - contact us for additional details.

Open ocean environments

The Mātai is the largest Sea Nest artificial reef module and is currently being designed for deployment in open ocean conditions. Watch this space for details on the development of the Mātai module.

Environmentally friendly, scalable production for all of NZ.

Sea Nest modules are produced by McGregor Concrete, which has more than 60 years of experience in concrete production. The size of and production power of McGregor Concrete means Sea Nest can produce modules efficiently, affordably and at scale.

McGregor Concrete was closely involved in mould and module design, which has ensured delivery of a quality product. Each module is made with sustainable concrete, without contaminants or reinforcing fibres. The modules are also constructed using concrete ‘overpours’ that meet Sea Nest construction requirements. This means that Sea Nests are using concrete that would otherwise go to waste.

With production ongoing, there is always Sea Nest substrate ready to be deployed - and the support of a partner like McGregor Concrete enables delivery anywhere in NZ!

The Kokoru.

The Kokoru is the first commercially available Sea Nest module. The module was inspired by our team’s desire to restore ecosystems in Bluff Harbour in Murihiku Southland. The Kokoru is the first eco-engineered artificial reef module designed specifically to restore degraded temperate marine environments. The Kokoru provides a simple, affordable, New Zealand designed solution to restore habitat for indigenous species, cultivate plants and food, protect the coast, and stem the tide of ecosystem decline.

Delivering low cost restoration solutions is central to the Sea Nest mission. Contact us at info@seanest.co.nz if you would like a quote for one Kokoru or one thousand.

Our first Kokoru modules were deployed in Bluff Harbour in May 2024. The modules are made to be easy to transport, and efficient to deploy - reducing project costs.

The Kokoru builds on global best practice design developed through the deployment of ‘reef balls’ in warmer climates. The Kokoru has a rough surface to maximise colonisation, holes of varying sizes for species refuge, is stackable, long-lasting, and is made with eco-friendly materials. The Kokoru can also be ‘planted’ or ‘seeded’ with target species for restoration or aquaculture purposes.

  • 30 mPA concrete

  • Greywacke (river rock) mixed with cement and gypsum

  • Rugasol (roughens concrete surface)

  • Height - 40cm

    Diameter (top) - 80cm

    Diameter (bottom) - 86cm

  • 180kg

    Submerged weight - 103kg

  • ~3 m2 of rocky reef surface area. It is noted that each module has a hollow base and only occupies ~0.17 m2 of the seabed.

  • 8cm-13cm

  • 0.4m3

  • Modules have been scientifically tested to ensure no contaminants are present.

Engineering assessment has confirmed the modules are structurally sound and stable on the seabed and would require 3.9 m/sec (7.8 knots) of current to overturn a single unit. Stability can be increased through deployment of multiple modules and layers (delivering a buttressing effect).
